There is no cut-and-dry answer to how long CBD stays in your system. Several factors including serving size, frequency of use, and individual body composition play a role. A concrete answer on how long CBD oil stays in your system isn’t available, but here’s what we do know.
In a study of 14 patients, each was given a large serving of 700 mg of CBD daily for six weeks. The average CBD level in the blood was just 1.5 ng/mL a week after the final dose and undetectable after that point. In this study, CBD was estimated to have a half-life of 2-5 days. Half-life is the time it takes for half the amount of a substance to be eliminated from the body. It generally takes 5.5 half-lives for a drug to be entirely eliminated. Therefore, CBD should completely leave the body in about 11-28 days.
Factors That Affect the Duration
Food Consumption
How much and what you eat impacts how your body processes CBD. After consuming a meal high in fats, higher levels of CBD are present in the bloodstream, making the half-life longer than if you were to consume CBD on an empty stomach. Eating high-fat foods causes CBD absorption to increase. This is great if you are looking for a more potent effect!
Frequency of Use
Using CBD regularly causes the compound to build up and stay in your system longer. This is because CBD is soluble in fat. “This means that it can build up in our fatty tissues for a long period of time after heavy use and can therefore remain in the system for prolonged periods of time,” says Dr. Johnson-Arbor. Another reason to take your CBD consistently for the best results!
Serving Size
The more CBD you take per serving, the longer it stays in your system. A 2005 study in the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Journal found that higher doses of CBD are detectable for much longer periods.
Body Composition
Everyone’s body is different. Your BMI and metabolism are only some factors that can influence how long CBD stays in your system. Depending on the person, CBD can remain in a person’s system from hours to about a month.
The half-life of CBD in the body can range from 1 hour up to 5 days, influenced by the factors above. If your concern is due to drug testing, you’re in the clear. It is highly unlikely for employers to drug test for CBD. Most drug tests only look for the presence of THC in your system. Pure Spectrum products are formulated to be 100% THC-free.
